Literacy Ambassador Featured on ABC World News Tonight
For many years, Monica hid the fact that she was functionally illiterate from family, friends and even her husband. She was unable to read newspapers, road signs, or fill out job applications - a painful existence with constant reminders of her limitation. She finally decided to seek help after becoming frustrated that she couldn't help her daughter with homework. After several years of intensive instruction with a local literacy group, she went on to earn her GED. She now spends her time tutoring, coordinating programs and inspiring other adult learners as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at the Country Oaks Leaning Center in Chipley Florida.
Monica is also involved in promoting adult learner leadership as a Board member of VALUE, a national organization of adult learners, and as a member of the Florida Literacy Coalition Adult Learner Committee. As an Alumnus of Florida�s Literacy Ambassador Training Program, she has come back to help train new ambassadors in recent years.
When asked about her experience with ABC News reporter Pierre Thomas, Baxley stated that she �was very relaxed and comfortable with him. My ambassador training helped me prepare for the interview.�
