\"\"<\/a>I registered for the Florida Literacy Conference on a whim.\u00a0 My rationale went something like this, “Adult and Family Literacy certainly applies to SensAbleLearning, LLC<\/a>, I’ll go.”<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It was a very good whim\u00a0 I followed.<\/p>\n

Souns\u00ae<\/a> is a hands-on phonemic awareness program inspired by the Montessori Method.\u00a0 \u00a0Letter sounds are taught before letter names.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s a simple switch with brilliant results. \u00a0Brenda Erickson, founder of Counterpane Montessori and creator of\u00a0 Souns\u00ae\u00a0, designed it for ages \u00a00-3, but I have used it as intervention with children in high school and Brenda has used Souns\u00ae with adult refugees. \u00a0(I learned\u00a0 Souns\u00ae\u00a0\u00a0for my two children, then ages 3 and 4, now 4 and 5. They learned to read so naturally using\u00a0 Souns\u00ae, I had the thought, “So many kids need this.” \u00a0And SensAble Learning, LLC was born.<\/p>\n

At the conference, I had my first experience using Souns\u00ae with an adult learner.\u00a0 He inquisitively looked at the Souns\u00ae symbols (letters) and I explained quickly how the program worked the first time he happened by.\u00a0 I realized quickly that his curiosity was more than piqued as he touched the letters and said the sounds with me.\u00a0 I wondered if he could read, but I did not ask.<\/p>\n

He left to attend a workshop but he soon returned and apologized for having to leave.\u00a0 I asked if he would like to sit and work with me for a bit using Souns\u00ae.\u00a0 He said yes.\u00a0 We went through each letter sound, just as the program suggests.\u00a0 Most of the sounds he learned very quickly.\u00a0 I have the tracking sheet we used. He did not recognize many of the letter sounds initially, but we practiced and he learned. \u00a0Next, I began building words with him using Souns\u00ae symbols and the objects I have ready in my box of three letter words.\u00a0 With each new word he built, a smile stretched from ear to ear displaying his delight in what I can only assume is a new understanding of this mysterious language code. \u00a0I wish I had more time with this young man.<\/p>\n

I loved every ah-ha moment that came across the faces of trained professionals, tutors and scholars \u00a0as they \u201cgot\u201d how teaching sounds first before letter names removes much of the confusion not needed for a beginning reader.\u00a0 But, the ah-ha that will remain in my heart is the one I saw in the smile of the curious young man.<\/p>\n
