This full day symposium will focus on providing tutors with valuable lesson plans, strategies and resources utilizing Tutor 8. This resource was written by Ruth Colvin with learning disabilities expert, Corrine Smith, PhD. It is the updated resource for tutors who want to be effective teachers to adult learners using a collaborative approach.
Participants will walk away with a customized tutor toolkit and Tutor 8 (limited quantity).
Session I: Introduction to Tutor 8
We will focus on an overview of Tutor 8 with an emphasis on goal setting and lesson planning, also appropriate for programs with a set curriculum. Become familiar with the basics of learner-centered instruction.
Session II: Tutor 8: Learning Disabilities
Explore Tutor 8’s new chapter on LD. Learn how to identify learning differences, create a learner profile and practice targeted instruction. Experience hands-on teaching strategies to add to your lesson plans.
Session III: Writing through the Senses: Multisensory Techniques to Encourage Writing
This hands-on, interactive session will focus on using multisensory techniques to encourage and improve student’s writing. We will discuss the theory and then take a journey in using our five senses as pre-writing prompts and organizational tools to develop our own writing. Activity modifications to fit the needs of learners including Basic Literacy, ESL and GED will be explored for both one-on-one and classroom settings. Activities will be related to techniques presented in Tutor 8.
