Gregory Smith • Executive Director

Greg Smith, Executive Director

Greg Smith has served as the Executive Director of the Florida Literacy Coalition since 2002. Prior to joining the Coalition, Greg served for 13 years as Executive Director of the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, Virginia’s oldest and largest community-based literacy organization.  He holds a Master’s Degree in Adult and Continuing Education from Virginia Tech and currently serves on ProLiteracy America's Public Policy and Advocacy Committee, Chair of the Council of State Organizations and Chair of the Health and ABE Issues Group of the Open Door Collective.

Susan Chapman • Bookkeeper

Susan Chapman, Bookkeeper

Susan has had a 30-year career as accounting professional serving in local government, first at the Orange County Comptroller's Office, and then at a county-wide special district in northern Vermont. She earned a Master of Professional Accountancy degree from Georgia State University, has held a Florida CPA license since 1987, and has maintained professional memberships in the American Institute of CPAs and the Government Finance Officers Association. Susan lives in Winter Springs, is active in church and other volunteer activities, and enjoys spending time with her two children and two grandchildren.

Heather Surrency • Health and Financial Literacy Coordinator

Heather Surrency, Health and Financial Literacy Coordinator

Heather Surrency is a public health professional with more than 15 years of experience in public health promotion and education. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Florida and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of South Carolina. Prior to joining the Coalition, Heather spent 12 years at Georgia Tech as the director of the Department of Health Promotion and as an instructor of an undergraduate preventative healthcare course.

Nicole Caban • Education and Training Coordinator

Nicole Caban, Education and Training Coordinator

Nicole has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Central Florida and started at FLC as an Americorps VISTA member. She has experience working with community based organizations doing volunteer recruitment, grant management, fundraising and tutor management. She has worked on several events with FLC and other member organizations. When she is not working, Nicole is either biking or visiting farmers markets around town.

Aissa Hernandez • Resource Specialist

Aissa Hernandez, Resource Specialist

Aissa is a native Texan, having earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from Texas State University. She is eager to use her communications and customer service skills to provide resources to adult learners around the state, and bring overall awareness to the issues surrounding adult literacy. In her free time, Aissa enjoys exploring Orlando’s theme parks with her husband, and spending time with their two dogs.

Zahra Nathoo • Event Management Intern

Zahra Nathoo, Event Management Intern

Zahra is a senior at Rosen College of Hospitality studying Event Management. She has experience working within her community by planning events for her mosque, and volunteering at expositions. She is eager to learn more about event planning and contribute her skills, to ensure a successful Literacy Conference, and further spread awareness about Adult Literacy. In her free time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her family.

Isabela Solis • Health and Financial Literacy Assistant

Isabela Solis, Health and Financial Literacy Assistant

Isabela is pursuing a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health and a master's degree in Applied Anthropology. Achieving health equity across cultures and populations that are at a disadvantage is a passion of hers. She received a B.A. in Psychology at the University of Texas at El Paso. She is eager to work with FLC to improve health literacy rates in Florida.
