Session Description:  One of the most critical needs of our new English speakers is the need to communicate effectively with medical personnel.  Whether speaking to a receptionist at a physician’s office for a simple appointment, or communicating with a pediatrician about your child’s condition, the ability to share medical and health related information accurately is critical.  As a literacy instructor or tutor, you may find that teaching effective communication strategies for health advocacy a particularly challenging area. 

Facilitated by Clair Valier, literacy trainer/consultant and co-author of the Staying Healthy curriculum, the session will include an overview of Staying Healthy and newly released Staying Healthy for Beginners curriculum. We’ll provide lots of hands-on activities/resources and time for discussion and idea sharing and each participant will receive a copy of the Staying Healthy for Beginners student resource guide.
